THOMAS GLOBAL WINS EXCELLENCE IN INNOVATION AWARD

    April 18, 2016

Melbourne, Australia: Thomas Global, a leader in the design, production and support of innovative electronics solutions for aerospace and defense applications, has received the Excellence in Innovation Award at the 2016 Aviation/Aerospace Australia Airspace Awards.

Sponsored by Boeing Aerostructures, this award highlights the unique factors that make Australian industry a leader in aviation and aerospace innovation. Thomas Global was recognised for its Adaptive Display Architecture™, and the associated development of a cost-effective upgrade for Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) Electronic Flight Information Systems (EFIS), which utilises a “plug and play” LCD display to substitute aging cockpit CRT displays that were first introduced in the early 1980s.

CEO of Thomas Global, Angus Hutchinson said: “We are delighted to receive the Excellence in Innovation award, which highlights the real depth of innovation within the Australian aerospace sector.” Hutchinson paid special tribute to the important contributions of Regional Express (Rex) and the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) in supporting the company’s innovation agenda: “The TFD-8601 LCD display was developed in partnership with Regional Express, one of the world’s leading regional airlines and the world’s largest operator of Saab 340 aircraft, with specific objectives to be cost effective, truly plug-and-play and with very high standards of fidelity to the existing CRT display. Thomas Global’s engineers developed a product that completely satisfied Rex’s requirements, working closely with the airline’s engineers to ensure that the solution was workable and practical. The TFD-8601 was first flown in the Saab 340 fleet of Rex on 11 August 2015 and replaces Rockwell Collins Proline II CRT displays.”

Hutchinson added “Regional Express, as launch customer for the TFD-8601 display – the first product to include Adaptive Display Architecture™ – has provided us with tremendous support and encouragement. Rex is a model, forward thinking regional operator. Also working closely with CASA, this is a great example of what Australian industry can deliver, working together.”

Until the development of the TFD-8601, there was no ability to specifically target CRT obsolescence without replacing the full EFIS – a very costly exercise, in addition to the significant equipment downtime and pilot retraining required.

David Barnes, COO of Thomas Global added “Our Adaptive Display Architecture™ is a game changer. It allows CRT cockpit displays to be replaced instantly without disturbing the rest of the EFIS and cockpit wiring. CRT obsolescence is eliminated while also allowing for a NextGen growth path. Perhaps most importantly, our plug-and-play CRT-to-LCD products also mean reduced maintenance costs for operators.”

Thomas Global is now leveraging the innovation embedded in in the TFD-8601 to address CRT obsolescence in an increasing range of narrow and wide bodied aircraft, including with alliance partners such as L-3 Aviation Products.

THOMAS GLOBAL & REGIONAL EXPRESS UNVEIL NEW LCD AVIONIC DISPLAY UNITS

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, BASED REGIONAL EXPRESS IS THE FIRST REGIONAL OPERATOR TO REAP THE BENEFITS OF NEW DROP-IN LCD COCKPIT RETROFIT SOLUTION

    May 27, 2015

Sydney, Australia: Thomas Global and Regional Express (Rex) today announced the successful first deliveries of the LCD TFD-8601 cockpit display, which is designed to replace traditional cockpit CRT primary flight displays on corporate and regional aircraft.

Angus Hutchinson, CEO of Thomas Global said, “The TFD-8601 LCD is a plug-and-play replacement for legacy CRT units and provides the aircraft with a flexible platform that can accommodate NextGen capabilities.  The TFD-8601 is designed to drive down maintenance costs and extend cockpit life, allowing operators to get the most out of their existing cockpit.  The TFD-8601 received its Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for the SAAB 340 on April 17, 2015.”

“This innovative cockpit solution is a replacement for the Rockwell Collins EFD-86 CRT unit, which is used on a range of regional and corporate aircraft including SAAB 340, Embraer EMB-120 Brasilia, Beechcraft King Air, Dassault Falcon, Gulfstream, Hawker and Learjet.  It is 50% lighter than the comparable CRT display, with significantly higher reliability and lower power consumption.”

Rex’s General Manager of Engineering, Dale Hall, said that the system is the result of Rex’s search for an avionics display system that could respond to the regulatory and technological challenges over the next decade.

“The Thomas Global LCD TFD-8601 has proven to have fulfilled all our requirements in rigorous testing on our aircraft and simulator over the last nine months.  It is a plug-and-play solution which allows us to replace only the display that is defective instead of all four at a time.  This also has the added advantage that we do not need to conduct additional training for our crew and the implementation could be phased in according to operational needs.  We will replace all our units over the next three years.”

“The system has been designed to allow integration with ADS-B output which enables our fleet to be fully compliant with impending regulations effective in February 2017.  We are confident that with the architecture we have specified, this system could also be easily upgraded to meet regulatory requirements that may be enforced over the next 10 years, thereby future-proofing our fleet.”

    ABOUT REGIONAL EXPRESS

Regional Express (Rex) is Australia’s largest independent regional airline operating a fleet of more than 40 SAAB 340 aircraft on some 1,300 weekly flights to 53 destinations throughout New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and Queensland. The innovative TFD-7000 Series has been developed with input from B757 and B767 owners, operators and lessors and aims to tackle the challenges of aging CRTs, particularly with growing concerns about the lack of cost effective upgrade alternatives for B757 and B767 fleets. Thomas Global Systems’ new LCD solution eliminates any obsolescence threat, dramatically increases system reliability, and drives down maintenance costs. The TFD-7000 Series allows operators to get the most out of their existing cockpit investments, eliminating expensive full cockpit upgrades and without changes to cockpit panels or wiring, equipment downtime and flight crew retraining.  Significantly, the TFD-7000 Series offers major weight savings – the new units are approximately 70% lighter than the existing CRT modules – thereby reducing operators’ fuel costs.

The TFD-7000 Series displays feature Thomas Globals Adaptive Display Architecture (TADA), a ground-breaking, flexible display design providing an adaptable platform that can accommodate NextGen capabilities and evolving technologies. The importance of adaptability is even more fundamental with changing legislation. The ADS-B mandate takes effect from January 1, 2020 and requires all aircraft operating in controlled airspace to be equipped with the new GPS-based identification technology.  Compliance will be much more costly to equip ageing aircraft using older technologies.  Thomas Globals retrofit solutions are ADS-B ready and support integration for this legislation.

In addition to offering major weight savings, the TFD-7000 Series displays generate less heat than existing CRTs, which is a huge advantage for flight deck panels, and are operational with reduced power consumption. Aircraft owners, operators and lessors are presented with a cost effective LCD retrofit solution that drives down flight deck operational and maintenance budgets and prolongs the life of an aircraft.  Disruption to operations and aircraft downtime are also significantly reduced.

Angus Hutchinson, CEO of Thomas Global stated, “Following the certification of our TFD-8601 LCD replacement for corporate and regional aircraft, we are pleased to present our TFD-7000 Series LCD replacements for B757 and B767 cockpits.  Both aircraft types have productive lives ahead, and our goal is to provide a cost effective, high performance and comprehensive LCD solution that will meet the long-term needs of B757 and B767 owners, operators and lessors. The TFD-7000 Series helps operators to avoid expensive full cockpit retrofits and get the most out of their existing cockpit investment.”

An expert in the sector, Thomas Global continues to invest and innovate, bringing customers around the world the most cutting-edge systems and solutions, as well as continuing to support existing products and services.  The CRT market is a priority support area for Thomas Global. Thomas Global is consistently chosen by airlines, MROs, government agencies and other operators for its long-term cockpit CRT display support programs, fast turnaround times and guaranteed performance.

THOMAS GLOBAL PIONEERS NEW LCD RETROFIT SOLUTION FOR CORPORATE & REGIONAL AIRCRAFT

GROUND BREAKING TFD-8601 DROP-IN DISPLAY EXTENDS COCKPIT LIFE, INCREASES OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY AND PROVIDES NEXTGEN GROWTH PLATFORM.

    March 26, 2015

Sydney, Australia and Irvine, California:  Thomas Global, a leader in the design, production and support of avionic display systems technology, launches the new LCD TFD-8601 cockpit retrofit solution for regional and corporate aircraft.  This new innovation is a true plug-and-play LCD replacement for Rockwell Collins’ EFD-86 CRT unit on a range of regional and corporate aircraft including SAAB 340, Embraer EMB-120 Brasilia, Beechcraft King Air, Dassault Falcon, Gulfstream, Hawker and Learjet.  With first customer deliveries expected to commence next month, the new TFD-8601 LCD will complement Thomas Globals extensive long-term CRT display support programs.

Following careful analysis of aircraft trends in the business and regional sector, Thomas Global developed the new TFD-8601 LCD retrofit solution to help owners, operators and lessors of regional and corporate aircraft tackle challenges of ageing CRTs, particularly with growing concerns about the lack of upgrade alternatives for legacy cockpits and component obsolescence.  This new LCD solution from Thomas Global eliminates any obsolescence threat, dramatically increases system reliability and drives down maintenance costs for the life of the aircraft.  The TFD-8601 helps operators avoid expensive full cockpit upgrades – the installation process of a new TFD-8601 is truly plug-and-play and can be completed instantly.  There are no upgrades in wiring or additional training required.

The TFD-8601 retrofit solution offers a flexible platform that can accommodate NextGen capabilities and evolving technologies. The importance of adaptability is even more fundamental with changing legislation.  The ADS-B mandate takes effect from January 1, 2020 and requires all aircraft operating in controlled airspace to be equipped with the new GPS-based identification technology.  Compliance will be much more costly for ageing aircraft using older technologies.  Thomas Global's new TFD-8601 retrofit solution is ADS-B ready and supports integration for this legislation.

The new LCD retrofit units not only generate less heat than existing CRTs, which is a huge advantage for cockpit panels, but they are operational with reduced power consumption. The TFD-8601 is nearly 50% lighter than the existing module, therefore also reducing operators’ fuel costs. Aircraft owners, operators and lessors are presented with a cost effective LCD retrofit solution that drives down cockpit maintenance budgets and prolongs the life of an aircraft.  Disruption to operations and aircraft downtime are also significantly reduced.

After warranties expire there is a sharp decline in aircraft values.  There are many factors that affect the residual value of an aircraft, one of which is maintenance history.  LCD upgrades are often recognised dollar for dollar in aircraft value tables, so not only are maintenance cost savings made, the TFD-8601 retrofit solution from Thomas Global Systems is also a step towards retaining aircraft residual values.

Angus Hutchinson, CEO of Thomas Global stated “Consistent with our focus on practical innovation, we are delighted to launch our TFD-8601 LCD retrofit, which strengthens and extends Thomas Global's commitment to provide customers with innovative flight deck solutions.  The TFD-8601 LCD display complements our long-term cockpit CRT support programs. We are proud to offer operators the choice of a high performance, innovative LCD solution which is NextGen ready. Our goal is to help operators reduce costs and extend the life of their existing cockpits.”

An expert in the sector, Thomas Global continues to invest and innovate, bringing customers around the world the most cutting-edge systems and solutions, as well as continuing to support existing products and services.  The CRT market remains a focal support area for Thomas Global and the Company will continue to offer the level of support for cockpit CRT displays that it is renowned for, even when components become obsolete. Thomas Global is consistently chosen by airlines, MROs, government agencies and other operators for its long-term cockpit display support programs, fast turnaround times and guaranteed performance.
